Maths Information

Our maths intent supports our school curriculum intent. This closely follows our vision and aims for our school – Pride – Respect – Success.  As an Infant School, we believe it is our responsibility to develop the core numeracy skills of all our pupils as they are the basis for all future learning and development.

Using the Early Years Foundation Stage Strategy and National Curriculum as a basis, age appropriate progression for each core subject has been identified. This has been mapped out to ensure that coverage of identified knowledge is secured across EYFS and KS1.

We carefully select the sequence of when, what and how knowledge is taught, revised and embedded and this is reviewed regularly.

Our maths curriculum is firmly based upon the development of key skills as dictated by the needs of our children. As part of this, links between fluency, reasoning and problem solving are explored and developed on a daily basis.

Maths Curriculum Intent

Statement of Intent:

At Clarendon Infant School, we intend for the children to become confident, competent mathematicians who understand and can use key mathematical concepts efficiently in everyday life.

To achieve this, we will provide the children with engaging opportunities to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. We aim for the children to be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of scenarios.   We provide opportunities for all children to reason mathematically by being asked to prove and explain their thinking using mathematical language.  We intend for the children to have a firm foundation of number and number operations allowing them to be successful mathematicians now and in the future. Above all we intend for all children to enjoy maths and be confident in their abilities.

Methods of Implementation:

At Clarendon Infant School, we follow the ‘Mastery’ learning model as the basis to our approach to teaching mathematics across the school. This means that we dedicate time for children to wallow and explore maths concepts ensuring a greater depth of understanding. Evidence shows that children need to be able to understand a concept, apply it in a range of situations and then be creative with it to really understand (or master) it.

In the early years foundation stage, our young mathematicians will be provided with many exciting opportunities to experience maths practically.  Through planned purposeful play and a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities children will develop their skills in counting, simple addition and subtraction problems and their understanding of shape, space, and measure.

In key stage one, children continue to develop their practical mathematical skills using a variety of manipulatives.  This then enables them to represent mathematical concepts pictorially before moving on to abstract representation when they are ready.  This ensures that children have a deep understanding of maths concepts that will provide them with a firm foundation for their mathematical journey.

At Clarendon Infants, key mathematical concepts are broken down into small steps, allowing children to move at their pace and teachers to identify misconceptions quickly.  Children will have opportunities to use manipulatives, pictures and problem solve in all steps as well as experiencing the step in a variety of different forms.

Impact

Our children, at Clarendon infants, become confident, competent mathematicians who have the firm foundations and fundamental skills necessary to successfully progress in their maths journey beyond our school. Children in our school understand that maths is fun and they can do maths.

Children talk enthusiastically about their maths learning.

All learners have the mathematical language to explain their mathematical thinking.

Children develop confidence in maths and a deep understanding of fundamental maths skills.

Teachers ensure that children have a deep understanding of key concepts.

Teachers deliver well planned lessons adapted to the needs of their class.
