In Year One children are taught to:-
Children are given shapes to fold and cut to show halves and quarters. We also use objects such as fruit to divide up.
In Year Two children are taught to:-
recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3 , 1/4 , 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity
write simple fractions for example, 1/2 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2
As in Year One, the children use shapes and objects such as fruit to explore these fractions.
They explore fractions of lengths such as saying what half of a given length would be.
In number children use sets of objects such as counters to find a half, quarter or third of a quantity by sharing them out.
